How Long Does a Luxury Interior Design Project Take?
“How long will this take?” It is one of the first questions I hear, and one of the most important. A luxury home is not assembled in a weekend, and anyone who promises otherwise is either cutting corners or about to disappoint you. After nearly thirty years of designing residences across six continents, here is an honest answer.
The short version: a single room typically takes three to four months from first consultation to final styling, and a full-home project usually spans six to twelve months or more. The longer version — the part that actually helps you plan — is about why.
What Actually Drives the Timeline
1. Discovery and Design (4 to 10 weeks)
Every project begins with understanding how you live, not with picking paint. The Sensory Interview, space planning, concept development, and material selection happen here. This phase cannot be rushed, because every decision downstream depends on getting it right. The homes that feel effortless are the ones where this groundwork was patient and thorough.
2. Sourcing and Custom Fabrication (8 to 20 weeks)
This is where luxury timelines diverge from retail ones. I source materials from artisan workshops around the world, and the finest pieces are made to order, not pulled off a shelf. A hand-knotted rug, custom millwork, a commissioned light fixture — these take time precisely because they are not mass-produced. The wait is the reason the result feels singular.
3. Construction and Installation (varies widely)
If your project involves renovation, the construction schedule often becomes the critical path — permits, trades, and the realities of building. For a home in El Dorado Hills or Granite Bay, a kitchen or bath renovation might add two to four months; a whole-home renovation considerably more. I provide construction administration throughout, so the design intent survives contact with the job site.
4. Styling and the Final Layer (2 to 3 weeks)
The last phase is the one most people underestimate and remember most. Art, accessories, the books on the shelf, the throw on the chair — the details that turn a finished room into a home that feels lived in and loved. This is where a house finally becomes yours.
